Okay, it may still be pretty warm right now. But those chillier days and evenings are upon us. It can be a tricky time to know what to wear. It’s too hot for winter woollies, but you need something more than t-shirts and summer dresses. The answer is transitional layering!
Read on for my tips on transitioning your summer pieces to the new season. Making them work harder for longer:
Shackets
Is it a shirt? Is it a jacket? It’s both! Shackets are great for wearing over a t-shirt or singlet when you need that extra layer. If you want to buy new, look out for shackets when searching, or they’re sometimes called ‘over shirts’ – especially in menswear. Or, take your favourite shirt and wear it open over your outfit – denim shirts work well for this.

Denim Jackets
I love denim jackets; they go well over any summer dress or skirt and top combo. As well as being an excellent mid-weight layer, a denim jacket can make a slightly dressy outfit more relaxed and, therefore, more wearable.
Lightweight Scarf

Aim for a large rectangular shape, as this means you have lots of options for ways to wear it! You can use a scarf to drape around your shoulders on chillier days or even turn it into a kimono-style jacket.
Clever Layering
Layering is a word that’s constantly bandied about, but what does it mean?! Well, you’re effectively layering whenever you put a sweater over a t-shirt. But in terms of eeking out the summer wardrobe, think a long sleeve top under a strappy dress (very on-trend 90s look!), a fine knit jumper or cardigan over a top, that shacket again, a biker jacket over a jumpsuit, you get the idea! Have a play and see what works.
TOP TIP: Choose relatively thin or fine pieces layered up. If the material’s too thick and textured, you’ll add bulk and look like the Michelin man 😆!
Footwear for Fresh Looks!
Switch up summer sandals for trainers or even boots. You’ll need to use your judgement to ensure they work with the outfit, but a pair of white leather trainers can work well with shorts or a denim dress, and long boots under summery skirts or culottes with a jumper give at least another few week’s worth of wear.
You likely have more in your wardrobe to carry you through from season to season. If you’d like a wardrobe review, contact me, and let’s see if we can help you discover the perfect pieces that you already own for transitional layering.
