When I work with clients, one area we explore is Style Personality. This ‘personality’ is the aspect of style that makes each of us unique. It allows us to express ourselves and helps us choose clothes and put together outfits in a way that feels ‘right’ for us. It’s a fascinating area.
There are six primary style personality ‘types’, although that’s not to put people into a restrictive box; we can change over time, or perhaps be a combination of two or three types depending on our mood and what the day has in store for us. But if we get a feel for the ‘looks’ we like, and those that suit us, it can make buying clothes and getting dressed a little easier, and dare I say it…? Fun!
Your style personality can also eek into lots of aspects of your image and personal brand – it’s not just about the clothes. Think about accessories – the sort of shoes you wear, your jewellery, belts, ties and cufflinks, scarves and hats. Your bag and purse or wallet can be a crucial giveaway when it comes to style personality. Do you favour a practical chuck-it-all-in rucksack, or a smart leather briefcase or tote? What about the colour, do you stick to neutral shades that will go with everything, or do you go bold with statement colour or a print?
What about tattoos – do you have any? If so, what do the images or words say about you? Even down to the car you drive (or your chosen mode of transport) – if we have a choice on this, again it can really reflect out personality and sometimes, without going too deep, what we stand for.
The Six Types of Style Personality:
Creatives
As the name suggests, these guys like to experiment and mix it up a bit! They’re not afraid of bold colour and print combinations, and even embrace a clash in either. Often scouting vintage or independent markets and boutiques, they like to find unique one-off pieces. There’s not much chance of a Creative bumping into someone wearing the same outfit as them, as they have a style all of their own and don’t follow the crowd.
Naturals
In many ways, at the opposite end of the spectrum to Creatives. Naturals like an easy-going and overall relaxed look. Their fundamental priority is practicality and comfort: no fussy details, scratchy fabrics, or distracting embellishments for them. Many naturals struggle with clothes shopping and may stick to buying a few things from the same shop they’re familiar with now and then. Supermarket ranges can be a draw as they can do their food shop AND pick up an outfit in one hit!
Classics
As the name suggests, Classics love a timeless look and tend to favour quality over quantity. They are a co-ordinated bunch and probably would recoil at the idea of a clashing pattern or unusual colour combo. They are often investment shoppers, buying a few pieces now and then that work with everything else they already have in their wardrobe. Smart, simple and elegant sums up the Classic.
Dramatics
Next up the bold look of the Dramatic! They like to make a statement with what they wear, and often are at the forefront of trends or new looks. Embellishments, patterns, strong shades and colour combinations are all ways for Dramatics to stand out. They often favour designer brands and love shopping. They are often tempted by a wow piece because they love it, regardless of whether they need it, or if it goes with anything else they’ve got.
Romantics
Romantics love putting time and effort into their look and their make-up or grooming. Luxurious fabrics and floral prints are a draw, and the most basic of pieces will often be embellished with pretty or unusual details. A frill here, a bit of lace there, a bold floral shirt or pocket scarf all give that Romantic vibe.
City Chic or International for the guys!
Last but by no means least, the City Chic/Internationals are a stylish and well put-together bunch. Like Classics, they like a co-ordinated look, but they bring a modern and slightly more relaxed edge. A tailored jacket may be paired with smart jeans and boots rather than a formal suit, or a layered look with tonal shades, rather than sticking to tried and test neutrals. They often look stylish, but understated, and are savvy shoppers.
